A resurfaced Cold War-era CIA document is reigniting fascination with one of archaeology’s most enduring mysteries: the legendary Hall of Records supposedly hidden beneath the Great Sphinx of Giza. The 1952 document, originally cataloging photographic negatives from archaeological expeditions, included a brief but provocative phrase referencing a “Temple under Sphinx.” While the file itself appears to be little more than an archival inventory, the wording has sent conspiracy forums and ancient history enthusiasts into overdrive. For decades, legends surrounding hidden chambers beneath the Sphinx have fueled speculation about lost civilizations, forbidden knowledge, and ancient records allegedly connected to Atlantis and other pre-flood societies.
The Hall of Records theory gained widespread attention through the writings of clairvoyant Edgar Cayce, who claimed in the 1930s that a hidden chamber beneath the Sphinx contained ancient texts documenting humanity’s forgotten history and catastrophic global events. Interest intensified further in the 1990s when seismic studies and ground-penetrating radar detected underground anomalies near the Giza Plateau, though mainstream archaeologists have consistently rejected claims that artificial chambers exist beneath the monument. Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has repeatedly denied the existence of any Hall of Records, insisting previous excavations found only solid rock beneath the Sphinx. Still, the rediscovered CIA reference has renewed public curiosity about whether governments or researchers may know more than has been publicly disclosed.
