More than three months after unveiling Operation Gideon’s Chariots, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have launched a large-scale ground campaign in Gaza, deploying five divisions for the first time since January. This significant military movement aligns with renewed efforts to pressure Hamas following failed ceasefire talks. The IDF’s strategy has shifted from targeted raids to territorial control, beginning with Khan Younis, as they prepare humanitarian zones to relocate civilians away from Hamas strongholds. Officials report that the IDF currently holds around 40% of Gaza, with a goal to control 75% within two months.
Since the collapse of talks in March, Israel has carried out over 2,900 strikes, killing more than 800 militants, including high-ranking Hamas operatives. The ongoing campaign is designed to dismantle Hamas’ infrastructure and political authority, while simultaneously providing humanitarian relief through aid centers operated by U.S.-based groups. Meanwhile, Hamas is reportedly experiencing an unprecedented crisis, with economic collapse, dwindling popular support, and weakened capabilities in Gaza and beyond. Despite external pressures—including a reported U.S. request to delay further escalation—Israel continues advancing, with IDF leadership emphasizing the operation’s goal to end Hamas’ rule and bring the remaining hostages home.
