IDF Jails Soldiers Over Jesus Statue

Apr 23, 2026

The Israeli military has disciplined two soldiers after a disturbing incident in southern Lebanon where a statue of Jesus was vandalized in the village of Debel. According to reports, one soldier used a sledgehammer to destroy the statue while another documented the act. The IDF later announced both soldiers were removed from combat duty and sentenced to prison time, while six additional soldiers present during the incident are being questioned over their failure to intervene.

Military leadership strongly condemned the act, calling it a moral failure that violated official standards and values. The IDF also stated its operations in Lebanon are aimed at Hezbollah and terrorist threats, not civilians or religious communities. In response, officials coordinated with the local Christian population to replace the damaged statue, while reaffirming rules regarding the treatment of churches, sacred symbols, and religious sites in conflict zones.
