Israel is preparing for the possibility that Iran could launch a direct attack during the upcoming Jewish High Holidays, with Defense Minister Israel Katz warning that the country's security establishment is closely monitoring Tehran for signs of escalation. Katz said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the IDF, and Israeli defense officials are reviewing intelligence daily and maintaining close coordination with the United States. Although Iran has recently targeted American military positions elsewhere in the Middle East while avoiding Israel, Katz warned that could change quickly. “We do not want to be surprised,” he said, stressing that Israel is prepared both defensively and offensively. The High Holiday season begins with Rosh Hashanah on the evening of September 11, followed by Yom Kippur and the Feast of Tabernacles in the weeks ahead.
Katz specifically raised the possibility that Iran could choose the Jewish holidays as the moment to strike, pointing to the history of Israel's enemies launching attacks during significant Jewish observances. The warning carries particular weight in a nation that remembers the surprise attack by Egypt and Syria on Yom Kippur in 1973 and the Hamas-led massacre on October 7, 2023, which occurred on Simchat Torah. Israel's current concerns come as Iran continues escalating against American forces across the region, including fresh attacks on U.S. military bases in Kuwait. Katz said Israel would respond “with great force” if Tehran directly attacks the Jewish state and emphasized that Israeli aircraft are prepared to launch. A day later, he sharpened that warning further, saying an Iranian attack would remove Israel's restraints and could result in devastating strikes against Iranian military, civilian, and energy infrastructure.
