As headlines focus on the recently announced memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, influential voices within the Islamic Republic are already framing the agreement as a strategic victory for Tehran. Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Iran’s revolutionary founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, publicly celebrated the deal and declared that the “greater jihad” now begins. In remarks broadcast by Iranian state media, Khomeini praised the resilience of the Iranian people during months of military pressure, sanctions, and regional conflict, portraying the agreement not as a concession but as proof of the Islamic Republic’s endurance.
Khomeini’s comments come amid growing tensions inside Iran itself. While many analysts have noted that several provisions of the agreement appear favorable to Tehran, the regime continues to face internal divisions. Hardline factions have criticized Iranian officials for engaging in negotiations with the United States, and some demonstrations have even included calls for the execution of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. At the same time, the regime continues to grapple with widespread public dissatisfaction following economic turmoil, deadly crackdowns on protesters, and accusations of severe human rights abuses.
