Iranian officials are once again signaling that Tehran has no intention of backing down from its nuclear ambitions or its strategic grip over the Strait of Hormuz, despite mounting pressure from the United States. Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Committee, declared that uranium enrichment and control of the Strait remain untouchable “red lines” as negotiations continue over a potential ceasefire framework with Washington. Azizi also warned that any American interference in what Iran calls the “new maritime regime” of the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as a direct violation of the ceasefire. His comments come as tensions continue simmering across the Persian Gulf, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
The latest statements reveal how fragile the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington truly remain. Earlier this month, US special envoy Steve Witkoff reiterated that any uranium enrichment by Iran is unacceptable to the United States due to fears of future weaponization. Iran, however, continues rejecting those demands outright. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi insisted the country will continue enriching uranium regardless of whether negotiations succeed or fail, while Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi warned talks would collapse entirely if Washington continued insisting on zero enrichment. Tehran continues framing enrichment as both a national right and a symbol of Iranian sovereignty under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
