Iranian authorities have executed 24-year-old Marzieh Nayeri, a young woman who human-rights organizations say was forced into marriage as a teenager and later convicted of killing her husband after years of abuse. Nayeri was hanged at Qazvin Central Prison on August 8 after Iranian courts rejected her claim that she acted in self-defense while resisting sexual assault. According to human-rights reports, she had been forced into marriage at approximately 17 years old and endured years of domestic and sexual violence before the fatal confrontation. Her execution has renewed international outrage over Iran’s treatment of women, child brides, abuse victims, and defendants sentenced to death under a judicial system repeatedly criticized for denying basic protections and fair trials.
Nayeri’s death is not occurring in isolation. Iran continues to make extensive use of capital punishment as its government intensifies repression at home, with executions involving political prisoners, protesters, women, and others drawing mounting condemnation from human-rights organizations and foreign governments. Amnesty International has accused Iranian authorities of using executions and accelerated judicial proceedings as tools of repression, while the European Union and 26 countries issued a joint condemnation this week calling on Tehran to halt executions connected to dissent and respect fundamental human rights. Behind the headlines about Iran’s nuclear program, missiles, proxy armies, and threats against Israel stands another reality: millions of ordinary Iranians live under an authoritarian theocratic system capable of imposing extraordinary punishment upon those caught within its machinery.
