A remarkable new Middle Eastern alliance could be preparing to expand. Iran has reportedly been invited to join the Mecca Agreement for Mutual Defense, the security pact signed August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian parliament's Khaneh Mellat news agency, told Al Mayadeen that Tehran has received an invitation and is currently reviewing it, although neither Iran's Foreign Ministry nor the three existing members have officially confirmed the offer. The agreement functions similarly to NATO's Article 5: an attack against one member would be considered an attack against them all. Members are already developing plans for military and diplomatic coordination, joint exercises, meetings between defense officials and commanders, and cooperation between their defense industries.
Iran's inclusion would dramatically change the character of the alliance. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan all maintain significant relationships with the West, while Iran has spent decades confronting the United States and openly threatening Israel. Yet Tehran has responded surprisingly favorably to the new pact. Iranian officials have described the emergence of a regional security structure as something Iran has advocated for years, while Turkey has made clear that additional countries could eventually join. If Iran accepts, the alliance would bring together Turkey's enormous conventional military, Saudi Arabia's financial power, Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, and Iran's missiles, drones, proxy networks, and regional military reach under one expanding security umbrella. What began as a three-nation pact could suddenly become one of the most consequential military alignments in the Middle East.
