Iran has reportedly placed a bounty on American military personnel, offering thousands of dollars to people who capture or kill U.S. soldiers amid the continuing confrontation between Washington and Tehran. According to Iran Army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia, private benefactors who wanted to participate in what he called the “jihad against the American enemy” but could not physically fight offered to finance rewards instead. Akraminia said an Iranian who captures a U.S. soldier—or hands over the remains of one—could receive roughly $20,000, with the reward rising to $40,000 if the person carrying out the act is a woman. Even more concerning, he suggested the reward could be extended to people in other countries throughout the region who successfully capture or kill an American service member. This is reportedly not the first such offer: Iranian Army Commander-in-Chief Amir Hatami announced a similar $30,000 reward in August.
The announcement comes as Iran simultaneously attempts to communicate directly with the American public. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a 25-page open letter urging U.S. voters to reject President Donald Trump's Iran policies, oppose American support for Israel, and embrace what Tehran characterized as the possibility of peaceful coexistence. That produces a striking contradiction: Iranian officials are speaking about coexistence with Americans while another Iranian military spokesman discusses financially rewarding people who capture or kill American troops. All of this unfolds as negotiations continue through regional mediators over Iran's nuclear program, sanctions, the Strait of Hormuz, and a possible path toward ending the war. The result is an increasingly volatile mixture of diplomacy, propaganda, economic warfare, military threats, and rhetoric that could encourage individuals far beyond Iran's borders to view American service members as legitimate targets.
