Iran Moves Key Systems at Natanz Nuclear Site

Sep 3, 2025

Fresh satellite imagery suggests Iran may be preparing for another strike on its Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, just months after it was damaged during Operation Rising Lion. According to American nuclear expert David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), Iran has removed and dispersed nearly all of the high-value cooling systems, or “chillers,” from the facility’s HVAC buildings. With the plant currently non-operational due to bombings that knocked out its power and centrifuges, Albright said the move appears to be a protective measure to make the equipment less vulnerable to future Israeli or U.S. airstrikes.

Albright explained that the chillers, which are essential for uranium enrichment, have been scattered across different areas of the Natanz complex, including helicopter pads and water purification zones. This tactic is reminiscent of how the U.S. previously exploited weaknesses in Iran’s ventilation systems during its attack on the Fordo nuclear site. By spreading out critical equipment, Iran seems to be trying to safeguard its nuclear infrastructure against another aerial assault while repairs and operations remain stalled.
