Iran has opened another dangerous front in the Middle East, launching two explosives-laden drones at senior government and intelligence targets in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region. According to Kurdish authorities, the August 17 attack targeted the private office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the head of the region’s security and intelligence agency. Investigators identified the weapons as Hadid-110 jet-powered drones, a newer Iranian design unveiled in 2025 and reportedly capable of greater speed and stealth than conventional propeller-driven drones. The timing is especially provocative: the attack occurred just after reports that Kurdish President Nechirvan Barzani could serve as an American backchannel for future diplomacy with Tehran. Iran has denied responsibility and suggested the incident was a “false flag,” but Kurdish officials directly blamed Tehran and described the attack as a dangerous escalation.
The strike appears to be part of a much broader Iranian effort to expand the battlefield and demonstrate that Tehran can reach its enemies throughout the region. The Kurdistan Region has reportedly endured more than 1,000 attacks from Iran and its proxies since the U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran in February. Iranian-backed militias have also attacked Saudi Arabia from Iraq, while Tehran continues applying pressure across Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza, and the Persian Gulf. Iran has a long history of using regional conflicts to test and showcase new weapons before distributing them to its proxies and allies. The Shahed-136 provides a striking example: Iran supplied the drone to the Houthis before exporting it to Russia, where Moscow deployed it extensively against Ukraine. The new Hadid-110 may represent the next stage of that strategy—faster, stealthier weapons being battle-tested while Tehran pushes to redraw the Middle East’s red lines.
