The war with Iran may be nowhere close to ending. According to a Wall Street Journal report cited by The Times of Israel and Reuters, top White House advisers—including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio—have privately warned President Donald Trump that Tehran could withstand American military and economic pressure long enough for the conflict to continue through the remainder of his presidency and potentially beyond January 2029. That assessment stands in contrast to Trump’s public prediction that the war will end “immediately after” the November midterm elections because Iran will no longer be able to sustain its resistance. The White House maintains that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely damaged and its economy is being squeezed by sanctions and a naval blockade, but the private warnings suggest senior officials are preparing for the possibility of a much longer confrontation.
