Iran is warning that it is prepared for what its foreign minister described as a “doomsday war” even as Tehran and Washington continue trying to find a diplomatic path out of their seven-month conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran remains willing to negotiate but is also fully prepared if American military strikes resume. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart nuclear negotiations, saying Tehran was seeking terms the United States would not accept. The Iranian proposal would have reopened the strait and resumed nuclear talks within a week if Washington lifted its naval blockade, eased restrictions on Iranian oil sales, and restored a regional ceasefire. Trump nevertheless said he expects additional negotiations, while Qatari mediators continue carrying proposals between Washington and Tehran.
At the center of the standoff remains Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Washington wants nuclear concessions included in any agreement, while Tehran has sought to postpone those negotiations until after immediate economic and military pressure is relieved. Araghchi has maintained that Iran’s uranium enrichment is peaceful and said Tehran could eventually negotiate over its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60%, while U.S. officials argue that enrichment at that level and Iran’s deeply buried nuclear infrastructure cannot be separated from the broader security dispute. Despite the war rhetoric, diplomacy has not stopped: Qatari intermediaries continued shuttle negotiations through the weekend, and another round of indirect discussions could occur within days. The world is therefore watching an extraordinary contradiction unfold in real time—officials are negotiating the terms of peace while openly discussing preparations for another devastating round of war.
