New reports indicate that some Israeli and American officials believe Mojtaba Khamenei is not truly functioning as Iran’s supreme leader and may not be in control of the government. According to sources familiar with the matter, real authority may now rest with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, especially under commander Ahmad Vahidi. He reportedly rose into greater prominence after senior commander Mohammad Pakpour was killed during recent military operations. While official narratives claim Khamenei remains involved, growing doubts continue to spread over who is actually directing Iran’s next moves.
Observers note that the IRGC has long been one of the most aggressive forces inside Iran, often resisting compromise with the West and openly threatening Israel. Analysts say commanders tied to the Guard are unlikely to support concessions in any future nuclear agreement or diplomatic arrangement. President Donald Trump recently added to the uncertainty by saying Iran does not know who its leader is and that multiple levels of leadership had been effectively removed. His comments have fueled speculation that Tehran’s command structure is fractured and struggling to function.
Although some reports claim Khamenei is still helping run the country through a collective leadership model, he has not appeared publicly or released audio since reportedly assuming power after his father’s assassination. Iranian state television has only issued written statements attributed to him. Meanwhile, efforts to restart talks between Iran and the United States reportedly failed because of internal disagreements among Tehran’s leadership. Sources say negotiators were even blocked from discussing nuclear matters, further showing that rival factions inside the regime may now be battling for control.
