Irish PM warns about deep-fakes

Jun 19, 2026

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence continues to blur the line between truth and deception, as Ireland's Prime Minister Micheál Martin recently found himself at the center of a sophisticated deepfake scam. A fake video circulating online used an AI-generated version of Martin to promote a fraudulent investment scheme, falsely claiming that anyone could earn tens of thousands of euros with minimal effort. While the video appeared convincing at first glance, it was entirely fabricated, prompting the Irish leader to publicly warn citizens about the growing dangers posed by AI-generated content.

The incident highlights a challenge that governments around the world are increasingly struggling to address. Deepfake technology can now create realistic videos, audio recordings, and images that are difficult for the average person to distinguish from authentic content. Martin called on social media platforms to take greater responsibility for identifying and removing such material before it spreads. The warning follows similar concerns during Ireland's recent presidential election, when a fake AI-generated video falsely appeared to show a leading candidate withdrawing from the race. As the technology becomes more accessible, scammers, political operatives, and malicious actors are finding new ways to exploit public trust and manipulate perception.
