A fake video circulating online used an AI-generated version of Martin to promote a fraudulent investment scheme, falsely claiming that anyone could earn tens of thousands of euros with minimal effort. While the video appeared convincing at first glance, it was entirely fabricated, prompting the Irish leader to publicly warn citizens about the growing dangers posed by AI-generated content.
The incident highlights a challenge that governments around the world are increasingly struggling to address. Deepfake technology can now create realistic videos, audio recordings, and images that are difficult for the average person to distinguish from authentic content. Martin called on social media platforms to take greater responsibility for identifying and removing such material before it spreads.
