President Donald Trump announced Friday night that a joint U.S. and Nigerian military operation successfully eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a senior Islamic State leader described as one of the world’s most active terrorists. According to Trump, the operation targeted al-Minuki in Africa after intelligence sources tracked his movements and activities. Trump stated that the Nigerian-born terrorist believed he could hide within Africa while continuing to help direct operations targeting both Africans and Americans abroad.

Al-Minuki had previously been identified by the U.S. State Department as a major ISIS figure and was sanctioned as a specially designated global terrorist by the Treasury Department. Trump praised both American special operations forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria for carrying out what he called a “meticulously planned and very complex mission.” The president claimed the operation significantly weakened ISIS’s global capabilities, especially as extremist groups continue attempting to expand influence throughout parts of Africa and the Middle East amid growing regional instability.
