California lawmakers are advancing legislation that would formally recognize two of Islam's most important holy days as state holidays. Assembly Bill 2017 would add Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, associated with the Islamic account of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, to California's official holiday calendar. The measure passed the State Assembly 64-1 and is moving through the Senate as lawmakers race toward the end of the legislative session. Under the proposal, state employees could use existing paid leave credits to observe the holidays, while public schools and community colleges could choose to close through agreements with employees.
