Concerns are growing in South Florida after reports surfaced that local government officials and civic leaders participated in numerous Ramadan events hosted by Islamic organizations across more than a dozen cities. According to reports, mayors, police officials, and other local leaders attended iftar dinners and community gatherings organized by groups with connections to broader Islamic advocacy networks. Supporters describe the events as interfaith outreach and community engagement, while critics warn that some of the organizations involved have historical ties to movements associated with the Muslim Brotherhood’s long-discussed strategy of cultural and political influence.
The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, has long promoted a gradual strategy of expanding influence through social institutions, education, and political engagement. Documents uncovered in previous investigations—including the group’s widely discussed 1991 memorandum—outlined a vision of spreading Islamic influence in Western societies through coalition-building and institutional participation. Critics argue that partnerships with certain organizations could unintentionally legitimize networks that promote ideological goals beyond simple religious outreach, while supporters maintain that dialogue and engagement are essential in pluralistic societies.
