Israel has appointed its first special envoy to the Christian world, signaling a major diplomatic move after recent scandals strained relations with global Christian communities. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar selected veteran diplomat George Deek for the newly created role, saying the position is meant to strengthen Israel ’s ties with Christians around the world. Deek, a member of the Arab Christian community in Jaffa, previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Azerbaijan and was the nation’s first Christian ambassador.
The appointment comes after several controversial incidents that raised concerns about Israel’s treatment of Christian communities and holy sites. Among the most widely criticized events was the barring of senior clergy from Palm Sunday worship because of wartime restrictions. Following international backlash, authorities reversed course and later approved a framework allowing limited worship access after intervention from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israeli leaders appear eager to prevent further damage to relationships with Christian allies, especially Evangelical supporters who have long stood strongly with Israel on the world stage. The new envoy role suggests Jerusalem recognizes the growing importance of maintaining trust with believers abroad during a time of war and rising global pressure. By choosing George Deek, Israel is also presenting a unique bridge figure—an experienced diplomat, an Arab Christian, and a public symbol of outreach to the wider Christian world.
