Pakistan's defense minister is calling on the Muslim world to unite against Israel, describing the Jewish state as a "common threat" just days after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey signed a significant trilateral defense agreement. Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif declared that Islamic nations should adopt a coordinated approach toward Israel and went so far as to label the Jewish state "illegitimate." His remarks carry additional weight because the newly announced agreement reportedly establishes a collective-defense arrangement in which an attack against one of the three participating countries would be treated as an attack against them all. The emerging alliance brings together Saudi Arabia's financial power, Turkey's massive military and NATO membership, and Pakistan's nuclear arsenal.
The timing and composition of this alliance deserve attention. Turkey has become increasingly confrontational toward Israel, Pakistan has never recognized the Jewish state, and Saudi Arabia now finds itself bound more closely to both nations through a formal defense framework. Asif's rhetoric also demonstrates how quickly a military partnership formed under the banner of mutual security can become intertwined with hostility toward Israel. Iran, meanwhile, has criticized the agreement, demonstrating that the Muslim world remains divided even as several major regional powers explore deeper military cooperation. The geopolitical map surrounding Israel is shifting again, and some of the nations doing the shifting possess enormous military, economic, and even nuclear capabilities.
