Israel Eyes Partial Sovereignty in Jordan Valley

Sep 1, 2025

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing to move forward with a limited sovereignty plan in the Jordan Valley, according to reports from Israel Hayom. While some ministers had hoped for broader measures, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer has been advancing a proposal focused only on partial sovereignty in Judea and Samaria. Dermer believes this narrower approach has a stronger chance of securing widespread agreement within Israel and even bipartisan approval in the United States, unlike past efforts to push for full sovereignty.

The issue is expected to come up at Sunday evening’s Diplomatic-Security Cabinet briefing, which will focus primarily on Israel’s ongoing war strategy in Gaza. While no progress has been made toward a hostage release deal, ministers will be asked to weigh in on possible steps against the Palestinian Authority, including the sovereignty plan. A senior government official said Netanyahu is prioritizing partial sovereignty, aware that Europe may still respond critically, even though the plan is far more limited than the sweeping measures once considered during the Trump administration.
