Israeli and Lebanese officials have resumed U.S.-mediated negotiations in Rome as efforts continue to reduce tensions along Israel's northern border. The talks are focused on implementing previous security agreements, addressing Israel's military presence in southern Lebanon, and strengthening the authority of the Lebanese government in areas long dominated by Hezbollah. While Lebanese officials have expressed hope for additional Israeli withdrawals, Israel maintains that any lasting arrangement must include meaningful action to eliminate the threat posed by Hezbollah's military infrastructure.
Hezbollah, however, continues to reject the negotiations and insists that any future Israeli withdrawal will come only through a broader agreement involving Iran rather than direct diplomacy with Lebanon. The Iranian-backed terrorist organization has denounced the talks while continuing to portray itself as the defender of Lebanon against Israel. The contrast between the Lebanese government's pursuit of diplomatic solutions and Hezbollah's continued allegiance to Tehran highlights Iran's enduring influence over one of the region's most powerful proxy forces.
