Israeli Energy Minister and security cabinet member Eli Cohen stated that Israel’s territorial control has steadily expanded from just over half of Gaza earlier this year to nearly 70 percent today. He argued that Hamas cannot be permitted to regain strength “even by a millimeter,” insisting that only full control of the territory can prevent the terror group from rebuilding its military and political infrastructure.
Cohen’s comments reflect a growing conviction within Israel’s leadership that temporary security zones and ceasefire arrangements are insufficient to neutralize Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of preventing Hamas from returning to power, while Israeli defense officials warn that the group is already attempting to recruit fighters, train operatives, and restore weapons production in areas outside direct Israeli control. Reports indicate that Hamas has used pauses in the fighting to regroup, reinforcing the belief among some Israeli leaders that a permanent security presence may be the only viable solution.
