Israel Prepares for Temple Service

Jul 1, 2026

A renewed focus on the red heifer and Temple preparations is gaining momentum in Israel as a recently born red calf in the Galilee has drawn national attention. Although the calf, named Tamima, was ultimately disqualified for use in the purification ceremony because of an ear tag blemish, religious leaders involved in the program view the birth as a significant step forward. The calf was born through breeding efforts utilizing imported genetics, and while she cannot presently fulfill the requirements outlined in Numbers 19, officials involved in the effort believe the birth demonstrates that the search for a qualified red heifer is making tangible progress.

At the same time, support for rebuilding the Temple continues to grow inside Israel. Recent surveys indicate that a majority of Israeli Jews now support rebuilding the Temple, while government-backed educational programs have reportedly reached approximately 150,000 participants with a goal of training 200,000 individuals. The effort includes instruction for priests, Levites, and others who could potentially serve in future Temple functions. Organizers describe a six-part strategy involving qualified red heifers, ritually pure priests, designated locations, legal rulings, public awareness, and national preparation. Virtual reality training systems and educational programs are also being developed to familiarize participants with Temple service and ritual requirements.
