Israel says it has eliminated two significant Hamas figures as the terrorist organization continues attempting to rebuild its military capabilities in Gaza. The IDF and Shin Bet announced that Izz al-Din Beik, commander of Hamas’s Northern Gaza Brigade, was killed in a precise aerial strike in northern Gaza. According to the Israeli military, Beik had previously served as the brigade’s military intelligence chief before taking command following the death of his predecessor, Ahmed Ghandour, in 2023. Israeli officials say Beik directed Hamas activity in northern Gaza, worked to organize attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops, and was actively involved in rebuilding a brigade badly damaged during the war. The IDF said Beik posed an immediate threat and that precautions, including aerial surveillance and precision munitions, were used to reduce the danger to civilians.
In a separate strike, Israel said it killed Shadi Abu Hasira, whom the IDF described as a central financial operative for Hamas’s military wing. Abu Hasira allegedly headed the “Geneva” money-exchange network, which Israeli officials say transferred tens of millions of shekels in foreign currency to Hamas. According to the IDF, that money helped finance terrorists, rebuild military infrastructure, and prepare additional attacks against Israeli forces. Israel also accused Abu Hasira of using commercial businesses to facilitate those financial operations. The two strikes reveal an important reality about the continuing conflict: destroying rockets, tunnels, weapons depots, and command centers is only part of dismantling a terrorist organization. Hamas also depends upon commanders who can reorganize fighters and financial networks capable of supplying the money necessary to rebuild what Israel has destroyed. The IDF characterized those rebuilding efforts as a systematic violation of the ceasefire.
