Israeli Man Denied Service at NYC Café

Jun 13, 2025

A recent incident at Variety Coffee Roasters in Brooklyn has sparked widespread backlash after an Israeli man, identified as S., was allegedly denied service for being Israeli. S., an engineer who moved to Park Slope with his family a year ago, said he was speaking Hebrew on the phone when he engaged in a brief exchange with two women outside the shop—one wearing a shirt with the words “Genocide” and “Stolen Land.” According to S., the conversation quickly turned hostile, filled with accusations of antisemitism and Nazi comparisons. When he later went inside the café to order a latte, the manager refused to serve him, citing his interaction with the women and labeling him as rude and genocidal. Although the manager eventually offered the coffee, S. declined and vowed never to return.

The incident has ignited outrage across social media, with many calling for a boycott of the popular New York coffee chain and leaving negative reviews online. Variety Coffee Roasters has not publicly responded to the allegations. S. expressed concern about the growing hostility toward Jews and Israelis in Park Slope, noting that even his young children have faced antisemitism. “We chose this neighborhood for its schools,” he said, “but we’re now surrounded by activism that feels threatening—fundraisers and events that glorify resistance at the expense of basic safety and civility.”
