Nearly half of Britons now want immigration from Israel reduced or stopped completely, according to a new YouGov survey highlighting a dramatic deterioration in attitudes toward Israelis. The poll found that 47% of respondents favored restricting Israeli immigration—23% wanted fewer Israelis admitted, while another 24% wanted Britain to allow none at all. That represents an eight-point increase from the 39% who expressed the same view in 2016. Israel now ranks among the nationalities facing the greatest immigration opposition in Britain, behind only Russia, Pakistan, and Nigeria in the survey. YouGov suggested the shift is presumably connected to increasingly negative attitudes toward Israel resulting from the Gaza conflict, although the survey itself did not ask individual respondents why they opposed Israeli immigration.
What makes the numbers particularly noteworthy is that opposition toward Israelis has grown more sharply than Britain's overall resistance to immigration. Among voters who supported remaining in the European Union in 2016—a group generally much more favorable toward immigration—the percentage wanting fewer or no Israeli immigrants jumped from 27% to 41%. Even Green Party voters, among Britain's most immigration-friendly political constituencies, showed unusually strong opposition toward Israelis. The poll arrives amid a broader collapse in British public support for Israel and an alarming rise in antisemitic incidents. During the first half of 2026, Britain's Community Security Trust recorded 1,926 antisemitic incidents, while physical assaults against Jews surged 82%, from 74 to 135. Opposition to immigration from Israel should not automatically be labeled antisemitism, but when it appears alongside growing anti-Israel sentiment and escalating anti-Jewish violence, the broader trajectory becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss.
