Germany is facing what officials are now calling the worst wave of antisemitism since the Holocaust, according to newly released annual figures documenting thousands of anti-Jewish incidents across the country. A report published by Germany’s Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism recorded 2,197 antisemitic incidents in Berlin alone during 2025. While the total marked a slight decline from the previous year, the numbers remain dramatically higher than levels seen before the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. In the German state of Hesse, antisemitic incidents surged to a record 1,099 cases — nearly six times higher than before the war began.

Government officials and Jewish leaders warn that the issue extends far beyond isolated attacks. Hesse antisemitism commissioner Uwe Becker declared that “the threat to Jewish life is worse than at any time since the Holocaust,” pointing to an increasingly hostile social climate throughout the country. Public demonstrations, anti-Israel activism, online radicalization, intimidation, vandalism, and threats against Jewish communities have all intensified as tensions surrounding Israel and the Middle East continue fueling unrest across Europe. Many Jewish residents in Germany now report living with heightened fear and uncertainty as antisemitic rhetoric becomes increasingly normalized in public discourse.
