Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told a gathering of Jewish Democrats that they have a “moral imperative” to consider the needs of the wider world even above their own security and survival as they decide how to vote in November. Nessel, who is Jewish, delivered the remarks Sunday while being honored at the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus' annual Summer Simcha gathering in Birmingham. According to reporting based on video of the private event, Nessel invoked the biblical story of Queen Esther and argued that Jewish voters may be called to sacrifice their “comfort, safety and security” and even the future of their own people for what she described as an opportunity to help save humanity. Her comments came amid deep divisions among Michigan's Jewish Democrats over Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, a fierce critic of Israel who has faced criticism from Jewish voters over previous rhetoric and his initial response to a terrorist attack on a synagogue outside Detroit.
