Joshua’s Altar Unearthed on Mount Ebal

Nov 3, 2025

High above the hills of Samaria stands Mount Ebal—a rugged, treeless summit that witnessed Israel’s first covenant renewal in the Promised Land. According to Deuteronomy and Joshua, it was here that the Israelites built an altar to the Lord after crossing the Jordan, proclaiming blessings and curses as commanded by Moses. For centuries, this altar remained hidden, dismissed by skeptics as myth. But in 1980, archaeologist Adam Zertal uncovered a massive rectangular structure on Ebal’s eastern slope, complete with a stone ramp and remains of burnt kosher animal bones. The design mirrored the altar described in the Mishnah and matched the biblical command to build with uncut stones and no steps. Could this be the very altar where Joshua fulfilled God’s command?

While academia hesitated to accept the find, believers recognized its profound significance. In an age of doubt, Mount Ebal stands as a testament that God’s Word endures, its promises written not only on parchment but in the stones of history. Even now, few can visit the site due to its location near Nablus, yet it remains a powerful reminder that the Bible’s truths continue to rise from the dust. As Israel faces modern challenges, the altar at Mount Ebal reaffirms a timeless reality—God’s covenants are unbreakable, His faithfulness unwavering, and His Word never buried for long.
