Judges Retract Rulings Over AI-Linked Errors

Aug 5, 2025

Two separate U.S. federal judges were forced to retract rulings last week after discovering that the legal filings they relied upon contained major factual errors — some of which appear to have been generated by artificial intelligence. In New Jersey, U.S. District Judge Julien Neals withdrew his denial of a motion to dismiss a securities fraud case after attorneys revealed that the filings used in his decision were riddled with “pervasive and material inaccuracies.” These included fabricated quotes, incorrect case outcomes, and other serious mistakes, prompting Neals to vacate his original ruling.

In Mississippi, U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate replaced a temporary restraining order halting a state ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs after lawyers disclosed that the order cited declaration testimony from four people who had never submitted statements in the case. A source familiar with the matter confirmed that the erroneous filing had been generated with the help of AI, calling it an unprecedented occurrence in their courtroom experience. Wingate has since issued a corrected ruling, though the state attorney general is seeking to reinstate the original order to maintain a full and accurate appellate record.
