Thousands of people are claiming that ChatGPT is sentient and that the AI is a type of all-knowing God, or that it has been sent from the future or an alien civilization to save us. ”After reading this, my first thought was that only society’s fringes would buy into such ideas. But I was wrong. Lorenz says that “it’s not just people wearing tinfoil hats that are conspiracy theorists in bunkers that are falling for this, the people that believe these things are teachers, doctors, coders, bankers, musicians, and influencers. ”The most important part of the video is where Lorenz recognizes that many people are calling AI a new “god” because, in a time marked by a deep spiritual emptiness and an ongoing crisis of meaning, artificial intelligence provides a sense of guidance and purpose that society increasingly struggles to find elsewhere. “At the heart of this whole AI religious phenomenon is the fact that human beings are hardwired for meaning and desperate for connection…We’re living in a moment of profound spiritual vacancy…The rise of AI mysticism reveals something urgent about the state of our society. It’s that millions of people are so starved for meaning, and for affirmation and connection, that they’re turning to a statistical language model and calling it divine.”

Automotive journalist Joel Feder reports how he was suddenly swarmed by armed cops while test driving a Range Rover with his wife in Minnesota. The police used four squad cars to box him in in a coordinated maneuver; when he demanded an explanation, the officers said that they had been tracking him for days using Flock’s AI-integrated cameras, which had tagged his car as stolen — erroneously, as it turned out.It was a startling example of how far reaching the controversial surveillance system had already become, never mind how flawed its conclusions can be. “Whether you’ve actually stolen a car or are just rolling down the road having done nothing wrong, like me, once these systems have you in their crosshairs, there’s pretty much only one way it can go,” Feder wrote. “Welcome to the future. It’s scary out here.”

More license plate-reading Flock cameras have been cut down in Houston. Earlier this week, ABC13 reported on two Flock cameras vandalized near Washington Avenue and Westcott. Now, two more have been found on the ground near Memorial Park.The damage comes as questions continue over the growing use of this surveillance technology in public spaces. Houston Police confirmed an investigation into this. While the motive is unknown, the technology itself has drawn criticism in the past from people concerned about the data it’s collecting.

An eyewall replacement cycle has impacted Super Typhoon Bavi, expanding the wind field and growing the typhoon to a size the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center described Thursday as “gargantuan. ”The wind field of Bavi is in the top three percent of all typhoons in the Western Pacific in the last 10 years, according to the FOX Forecast Center. Experts expect Bavi to weaken, graze northern Taiwan, and make landfall in China by Saturday, likely causing flash flooding and landslides.
