Rare bacteria in water traced to AI data center construction project
A rare bacteria found in the water has been traced to a new AI data center under construction in Wyoming. The San Francisco Gate reports the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities discovered its reclaimed water irrigation system was contaminated with Cupriavidus gilardii during a routine sampling in February. After months of testing, officials determined the bacterium came from from Fortis Construction, a contractor working on a 715,000-square-foot data center for Meta, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned tech company that operates Facebook and Instagram. According to The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, contaminated wastewater from the project, known as “Project Cosmo,” was flushed into public sewers. The local utilities board responded by forcing Meta to adopt strict new safety regulations that ban wastewater discharge from certain types of data centers.
