Mojtaba Khamenei used a series of public statements this week to frame Iran’s growing confrontation with the United States and Israel as a religious and ideological war, openly describing the conflict in terms of “Sacred Defense.” Counterterrorism analysts say the language used by Iran’s leader carries the full weight of jihad within Shia Islamic doctrine. Khamenei praised what he called Iran’s emergence as a major power following resistance against “American and Zionist invasion,” while also emphasizing the future expansion of an Islamic-Iranian civilization. The comments came just days after President Donald Trump delayed a planned military strike against Iran amid ongoing tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear program.

Analysts warn that the rhetoric represents far more than political messaging. According to experts, Iran’s leadership is intentionally framing the conflict as a spiritual obligation while continuing decades of anti-American and anti-Israel ideology embedded within the Islamic Republic. The messaging also highlights the growing radicalization and escalation unfolding across the Middle East as Tehran seeks to rally support through religious fervor. At the same time, critics pointed out the irony that Khamenei delivered the message through X, a platform heavily restricted inside Iran while ordinary citizens endure severe internet blackouts and government censorship.
