South Korea is reportedly moving closer to deploying robotic systems along its heavily fortified border with North Korea as the country embraces the next generation of AI-powered military technology. According to reports, the South Korean Defense Ministry is in discussions with Hyundai Motor Company over the use of advanced robotic platforms for surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics, and other non-combat operations in the demilitarized zone. The systems under consideration reportedly include Boston Dynamics’ robotic “Spot” units, Hyundai’s compact MobED mobility robots, and wearable exoskeleton technology designed to assist human troops. Officials say the move is partly driven by evolving modern warfare and worsening troop shortages as global militaries increasingly turn toward automation.
The push comes as conflicts around the world continue to showcase the growing role of drones, robotics, and autonomous systems on the battlefield. From the Russia-Ukraine war to Middle Eastern conflicts, unmanned systems are rapidly becoming central to military operations. Defense analysts now project global spending on robotic and unmanned military systems could surpass $30 billion annually within the next few years. South Korea’s military says it is seeking to build a “high-tech, science-driven force” capable of responding to the changing realities of modern warfare. Similar robotic deployments are already being used in places like Ukraine and along China’s borders, signaling a broader global shift toward AI-assisted defense infrastructure.
