LGBT media outlets are celebrating several episcopal appointments made by Pope Leo XIV, arguing that the selections signal greater openness toward LGBTQ Catholics within the Roman Catholic Church. Recent attention has centered on four bishops—James Checchio, Ramón Bejarano, Christian Würtz, and Thomas Hennen—who have varying records of involvement with LGBTQ outreach or controversial approaches to sexuality. Bishop Bejarano previously celebrated an LGBTQ-themed “All Are Welcome” Mass where a drag performer and activist was permitted to speak, while Würtz supported the German Synodal Way’s efforts to reassess traditional Catholic teaching on homosexuality and voted in favor of allowing blessings for same-sex couples. New Ways Ministry, an LGBTQ Catholic advocacy organization, praised the appointments as evidence that Leo is elevating bishops who demonstrate greater openness toward LGBTQ ministry.
