Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

In recent years, New York City has seen a demographic shift that is reshaping its political landscape. The Muslim population, largely bolstered by immigration from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India, has grown significantly—transforming entire neighborhoods, particularly in Queens. Names like Mohammed and Ahmed now rank among the city’s most common for newborn boys, reflecting this rise. Out of this shift emerged Zohran Mamdani, an Indian Muslim politician backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, who leveraged bloc voting in heavily Muslim districts to unseat established Democrats. His success was narrow but symbolically powerful, representing a trend where concentrated voting blocs can sway elections in districts with low overall turnout.
Mamdani’s political ascent highlights the growing influence of Islam within New York’s civic sphere, a development accelerated by demographic momentum since 9/11. Once dominated by Arab communities, the city’s Muslim population has diversified and expanded, building hundreds of mosques and establishing a stronghold in Queens. Mamdani’s career mirrors this broader trajectory: using identity politics, grassroots mobilization, and alignment with far-left platforms, he has become a face of what critics warn is an ongoing “Islamization” of New York. Whether viewed as a natural product of immigration or a deliberate strategy of cultural influence, his rise illustrates how shifting demographics are driving profound political change in America’s largest city.
