Two people were killed and several others injured during a violent attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar. Greater Manchester Police reported that the incident began when a security guard outside the synagogue was stabbed, before the suspect drove a car into pedestrians. Firearms officers responded quickly, and the suspected attacker was shot dead at the scene.

Authorities declared the incident a “major incident” and activated “Plato,” the national emergency protocol used in the event of a marauding terror attack. In addition to the two fatalities, three others remain in serious condition in hospital. The attack has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond, turning a sacred day of fasting and prayer into one marked by violence and grief.
