At least 47 people were killed and 22 wounded after armed gang members descended on Kenscoff, a mountainous community overlooking Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, in what local officials described as a “night of terror.” Many of the victims had sought refuge at a church being used to shelter displaced residents when gunmen stormed the area, carrying out some of the killings execution-style. More than 50 people were reportedly kidnapped, including children, while homes were burned and residents fled for their lives. A gang leader known as “Izo 2,” associated with the notorious 5 Segonn gang and the broader Viv Ansanm coalition, threatened to execute hostages if security forces killed members of his group. The United Nations cautioned that the casualty figures could still rise as authorities continue assessing the devastation.
