Medvedev Warns of Iran’s Nuclear Backing

Jun 23, 2025

Russia’s former president, Dmitry Medvedev, made provocative claims following U.S. airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. In a post on X, Medvedev stated that Iran’s nuclear ambitions will not only continue but may soon receive support from unnamed foreign allies willing to provide actual nuclear warheads. Though he did not name specific nations, Russia’s long-standing support for Iran's nuclear program and its current efforts to mediate between Iran and Israel suggest Moscow may be facilitating or encouraging deeper international cooperation with Tehran. Medvedev’s remarks come as tensions escalate dramatically, with over 125 U.S. aircraft, including B-2 bombers, involved in Saturday’s mission—a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. strikes as violations of international law, accusing Washington of breaching the UN Charter and acting with aggression against a sovereign state. Meanwhile, the U.S. has defended its actions as necessary to counter Iran’s growing nuclear threat, especially in light of ongoing threats and previous attacks on American forces. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth assured that the U.S. is working closely with regional allies to ensure force protection and strategic readiness. With Russia invoking its past involvement in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and signaling new diplomatic ambitions, the geopolitical stage is set for further conflict—or a radical shift in alliances that could have wide-reaching implications.
