The reported assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has sent shockwaves through the Middle East, triggering the activation of Iran’s interim Leadership Council. At the center of this sudden transition stands Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, now appointed as a jurist member of the three-man council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. According to Iranian officials, contingency plans were already in place for “the martyrdom” of the Supreme Leader. In a regime built upon clerical authority and revolutionary continuity, the machinery of succession moved swiftly, signaling both preparation and resolve.
Arafi, born in 1959 into a clerical family in Yazd province, is no outsider to Iran’s religious establishment. His father was portrayed in state media as having ties to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the architect of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The interim council will assume the Supreme Leader’s duties until the Assembly of Experts selects a permanent successor. In the Islamic Republic, political power is inseparable from religious authority. Whoever ultimately ascends to the position of Supreme Leader will wield immense influence over Iran’s military, nuclear ambitions, proxy networks, and regional strategy. In moments like this, the stability of the regime—and the direction of its hostility toward Israel and the West—comes sharply into focus.
