Mexico Mandates Biometric Digital ID System

Jul 21, 2025

Mexico is officially transitioning its optional digital ID system, the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP), into a mandatory national identification program. The updated CURP will now feature biometric data such as fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs embedded within a QR code. The government anticipates full implementation by February 2026, expanding CURP’s use beyond its traditional roles—such as tax filings, school registration, and passport applications—into a centralized, biometric-based identification system.

In tandem with this rollout, Mexico is launching a Unified Identity Platform to merge various government databases into a single, integrated system. This initiative is set to go live within 90 days and will connect both public and private institutions. A parallel program will begin collecting biometric data from minors within 120 days. Although officials claim that current privacy laws are adequate to protect citizens, critics argue that this sweeping data collection raises serious concerns about surveillance, data security, and the potential erosion of civil liberties in a society increasingly reliant on digital checkpoints.
