Doctors are uncovering troubling evidence that microplastics—now ubiquitous in food, water, and air—may be directly contributing to heart attacks and strokes. In a new study led by researchers at University of California, Riverside, scientists found that microplastic exposure dramatically increased arterial plaque buildup in lab mice predisposed to atherosclerosis. The findings, published in Environment International, revealed a striking pattern: male mice experienced severe plaque accumulation despite maintaining low cholesterol levels and a healthy diet, while female mice showed little to no effect.
Researchers discovered that microplastics altered endothelial cells lining the arteries, activating genes that promote inflammation and plaque growth—the very conditions that precede heart attacks and strokes. Similar effects were observed when human endothelial cells were exposed to microplastics in laboratory settings. While the exact biological mechanism is still being studied, scientists suspect hormonal and genetic factors may explain the sex-based differences. For prophecy-minded observers, the study underscores a sobering reality: humanity is increasingly surrounded—and infiltrated—by unseen contaminants with real consequences. As the created order groans under modern industrial excess, discernment and stewardship of the body have never been more urgent.
