Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated this week that Israel remains the only country in the Middle East where the Christian population is continuing to grow. Speaking alongside Germany’s foreign minister in Berlin, Sa’ar noted that Israel’s Christian population has increased from roughly 34,000 in 1950 to more than 188,000 today. He contrasted that growth with the broader regional decline of Christian communities across the Middle East, pointing specifically to Bethlehem, which he said has shifted from being approximately 85% Christian in the past to around 10% today under Palestinian Authority governance.

The remarks came as tensions flared in Bethlehem following reports that Palestinian suspects who allegedly carried out a Molotov cocktail attack fled into a church compound while being pursued by Israeli forces. Videos circulating online appeared to show worshippers attempting to block the suspects from entering the church. Israeli officials stated that security forces were conducting operations in the area following the attack, adding another layer of unrest to a city long associated with Christianity’s biblical heritage.
