One of Silicon Valley’s most respected venture capitalists is sounding the alarm over the direction of artificial intelligence development. Bill Gurley, a longtime technology investor and partner at Benchmark Capital, recently warned that AI company Anthropic may be pursuing something far more ambitious than software innovation. After spending weeks studying the company’s leadership and philosophy, Gurley concluded that some within the AI movement appear genuinely enthusiastic about creating an intelligence that surpasses humanity itself. He described the effort as nothing less than “midwifing a deity,” comparing the project to a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein experiment with potentially irreversible consequences.
Gurley’s concerns center on statements and writings from Anthropic leadership that envision a future where highly advanced AI systems could make decisions on behalf of humanity and potentially manage economic resources according to their own calculations. While Anthropic publicly promotes AI safety and responsible development, Gurley suggested that behind the safety rhetoric lies a much larger vision: the creation of a new form of intelligence capable of exercising authority over human affairs.
