Mojtaba Khamenei New Supreme Leader in Iran

Mar 9, 2026

Iran has officially announced that Mojtaba Khamenei will serve as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The appointment was confirmed by Iran’s Assembly of Experts following the death of the elder Khamenei in joint U.S.–Israeli strikes carried out during the early phase of Operation Roaring Lion. Mojtaba Khamenei has long been viewed as a powerful figure within Iran’s internal security apparatus and has maintained close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), making him a leading candidate to inherit the regime’s leadership.

Reports indicate that Mojtaba himself survived the initial strike that killed several members of his family, including his father. Despite internal political tensions surrounding the succession, the Assembly of Experts ultimately selected him to lead the Islamic Republic during one of the most volatile periods in the nation’s modern history. His rise to power places him at the center of an ongoing regional conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran’s network of proxy forces across the Middle East.
