Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Forecasters with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are warning that the Pacific Ocean may be rapidly moving toward one of the strongest El Niño events ever recorded. According to the agency’s latest Climate Prediction Center update, there is now an 82% chance that El Niño conditions will fully develop by mid-summer 2026 and continue into the winter months. Scientists say sea surface temperatures in the critical Niño-3.4 region could potentially rise above the 2.0 degrees Celsius threshold — placing this event in the same category as the historic “Super El Niño” events of 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16.
Previous El Niño events of that magnitude caused devastating global consequences including catastrophic flooding, severe droughts, deadly wildfires, food shortages, crop failures, and billions of dollars in economic damage. The 1997-98 event alone reportedly killed more than 23,000 people worldwide while triggering widespread disasters across multiple continents. NOAA researchers warn that a similarly powerful event in 2026-27 could dramatically disrupt global weather patterns once again, fueling temperature extremes, intensifying storms in some regions, and worsening drought and famine conditions in others. Scientists also acknowledge that small differences in ocean temperature measurements could determine whether this event becomes one of the strongest in modern recorded history.
