A newly released national poll reveals that belief in extraterrestrial life continues to rise among Americans, highlighting a dramatic cultural shift in how people view the UFO phenomenon. According to the CBS News and YouGov survey of more than 2,000 adults, 63% now believe intelligent life exists on other planets, a significant increase from 56% in 2017 and just 48% in 1997. Nearly half of respondents said they expect humanity to make contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life in the future, while an astonishing 21% believe such contact has already occurred.
The survey also found that Americans remain sharply divided over the nature of UFOs. Slightly more than half of those questioned believe unidentified flying objects may be alien spacecraft, while 49% attribute them to natural phenomena or human activity. Among those who already believe intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, support for the extraterrestrial explanation rises dramatically. Recent Pentagon-released UFO videos appear to be influencing public opinion as well, with nearly one-third of respondents saying the footage made them more likely to believe aliens have visited Earth.
A remarkable 84% of respondents said they believe the government knows more about UFOs than it is revealing to the public. As disclosure narratives continue to dominate headlines, entertainment, congressional hearings, and social media discussions, fascination with extraterrestrial explanations appears to be moving steadily from the fringe into the mainstream. In a generation increasingly captivated by supernatural mysteries, alternative origins, and non-human intelligences, the UFO phenomenon continues to gain credibility in the eyes of millions who are searching for answers beyond the boundaries of conventional explanations.
