Most Jews in Israel Within 5 Years?

WZO chief predicts most of world’s Jews will live in Israel within 5 years

A historic demographic milestone could be only a few years away. World Zionist Organization Chairman Yaakov Hagoel predicts that within five years, more than half of the world’s Jewish population will be living in Israel—something he says has not happened in approximately 2,000 years. Speaking at ynet Global’s Aliyah Live Summit, Hagoel pointed to continued aliyah, assimilation among Jewish communities abroad, and Israel’s comparatively high birth rate as forces driving the shift. Israel already surpassed the United States as home to the world’s largest Jewish population roughly two decades ago, but crossing the 50% threshold would represent something dramatically different: for the first time since the ancient dispersion, the center of gravity of the Jewish people would once again be the Land of Israel. Hagoel called aliyah the “growth engine” of the Jewish state and urged Israelis to recognize the enormous personal upheaval involved when Jewish families leave their homes, careers, languages, and communities abroad to begin again in Israel.

Perhaps even more remarkable is what Hagoel says has happened since October 7. Rather than severing the connection between Diaspora Jews and Israel, the Hamas massacre and the explosion of antisemitism that followed have caused many—particularly younger Jews—to rediscover their Jewish identity. Hagoel described a post-October 7 “renaissance,” pointing to tens of thousands of American Jews who reportedly describe themselves as “October 8 Jews”: people for whom being Jewish suddenly became much more significant after the massacre and its aftermath. That renewed identity is appearing through greater involvement in synagogues, Jewish schools, Zionist organizations, Israel programs, and growing interest in aliyah. Some young Jews are even traveling to Israel to serve in the military before returning to lives in the United States or Britain. Hagoel acknowledged that others have moved away from Israel amid the war and international criticism, but he believes the number moving closer to their Jewish identity is considerably greater.
