mRNA Ebola Vaccine Fast-Tracked

Jun 2, 2026

As a dangerous Ebola outbreak continues to spread across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, global health officials are racing to develop the world's first vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) announced it is committing more than $60 million toward multiple vaccine candidates, including up to $50 million for Moderna to develop and test an mRNA-based vaccine. The accelerated effort comes as health authorities acknowledge that the outbreak was detected too late, allowing the virus to spread across regions already plagued by conflict, population displacement, and humanitarian instability.

Unlike previous Ebola outbreaks, the current crisis is being driven by the relatively rare Bundibugyo ebolavirus, a strain for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists. Moderna plans to leverage the same mRNA technology used during the COVID-19 pandemic to rapidly advance vaccine development while simultaneously preparing manufacturing capacity should larger clinical trials become necessary. Additional funding has been directed toward vaccine programs being developed by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, the University of Oxford, and the Serum Institute of India. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reports that more than 1,000 cases and over 240 deaths have already been linked to the outbreak, with health officials warning that the epidemic is expanding faster than containment efforts.
